There is nothing more refreshing than a drink of coconut water especially during hot, sunny days where humidity is high and the heat is overwhelming. However, if you were to go to a coffee shop or a restaurant to order a glass of coconut water, be prepared for a watered down coconut drink with sugar and ice. And it is often overpriced too.
Not exactly my idea of enjoying the real taste of coconut water!
In Penang, there is only one main place to go for coconut water and at a reasonable price too. However, don’t . . . → Read More: The place to get coconut water
We took some time out and went to the iFoodex on Friday and find that despite my reservations about it being anything great at all, it was not as disappointing as I thought it would be.
As with previous years, it was crowded and this year, there are more stalls and with even a ‘healthy food’ section selling organic food, vitamins, health drinks, etc. And to make things more interesting, they even coincide the event with a Chef’s challenge and a property and home show so there are more things to see.
Burdock root is not commonly used for cooking but now it is slowly catching on with burdock root being sold at supermarkets and wet markets nowadays.
When cooked, it is very sweet and tasty. Burdock root is also quite healthy, according to these facts:
It contains a lot of minerals, vitamins, protein and amino acids such as lysine, proline, choline, Vitamin C, Vitamin K, folate, calcium, phosphorus, potassium and magnesium. It is considered as a type of vegetable and is also low in calorie – 118gm of burdock root contains only 85 calories. It is one of the vegetables . . . → Read More: Burdock root rice
In times of increasing prices, it is not easy to find places selling reasonably priced or cheap but good food. So, it is quite reassuring when we went to the Taman Free School hawker centre (near Heng Ee secondary school roundabout) to find that the food there is still quite reasonably priced and some of it are quite good too.
This is one of my favourite stalls there…they sell cheap seafood but only limited variety because they only have crabs, mussels, balitong (can’t remember what it’s called in English) and the weird shellfish with . . . → Read More: Cheap seafood and wonderful pancakes
I simply love the ‘Lengau th’ng’ (Lotus Root Soup) and it is actually one of the first soups I learn to cook when I started venturing into the kitchen to prepare my own meals. Lotus root is one of the more common vegetable used by Chinese for soups and stir-fry dishes. It is especially good in soups because of its sweet taste. So, why are the Chinese so crazy about lotus root?
Well, I checked and found that:
lotus root is a good source of Dietary Fiber, Thiamin, Vitamin B6, Phosphorus, Potassium, Copper and Manganese, and . . . → Read More: Lotus Root and Peanut Soup and its benefits
As a chocolate lover, I am always on the lookout for a great place to buy chocolates and I absolutely love the specialty handmade ‘designer’ chocolate shops in a few shopping complexes in KL.
It is too bad that there are no such shops here in Penang but I can probably understand that there are probably not much market here since those chocolates are really expensive and we all know how kiamsiap (stingy) Penangites are.
So, a few months back I stumbled upon The Chocolate Boutique in Leith Street here in Penang. Actually I knew about it when . . . → Read More: Where NOT to buy chocolates
I have tried the famous Serdang fried porridge years ago and been back to the place only twice after that. However, the taste of this special dish stayed with me and my husband so when we had the chance, we went out of the way to taste it again.
This place is very remote and quite far off from the toll turning to Serdang, Kedah. From Seberang Jaya, it will take about 45 minutes’ drive. We were on our way back from Taiping so we just make a detour for dinner at Serdang before heading back.
