A Corny Post
One of my favourite snacks is steamed / boiled corn. It was not until I took a bite of fresh, uncooked corn in Cameron Highlands years ago that I realised that corn can be eaten raw as long as it is fresh, juicy and sweet!
So, occasionally, I do eat my corn raw. And no, I do not like those sissy corn in a cup thingies. It just takes the fun out of eating corn! Heck, where is the fun in it if you use a spoon to eat corn instead of holding the whole ear and taking bite after bite of it?
Also, I do not like to eat corn cooked with anything else. Canned baby corns can be cooked with vegetables, that’s okay but the regular corn, nope, it is best eaten as it is or slobbered in butter and salt, thank you very much!
So, like my other food trivia and facts, here are some facts and benefits I found out about corn and the reasons why we should grab for an ear of corn instead of junk food:
- It contains Thiamin (vitamin B1) – it is good for the metabolism of carbohydrates
- It contains Pantothenic acid (vitamin B5) – it is good for physiological functions
- It contains folate and vitamin C – helps in generating new cells especially for pregnant women and vitamin c helps fight illnesses.
- It is a good source of fibre
- It is a type of grass so when people tell you to eat grass, go eat corn!
- It came from north, central and south America.
- Corn can be used in 3.500 different ways other than just as food, amongst which – it could be livestock feed, sweetener and food.
It is best eaten raw if it is fresh, juicy and chemical free. Otherwise, you can boil it in a pot till cooked, then remove from heat and slather on the butter and salt.

Great to cook in a pressure cooker. Extra tender and the water cool off and put in the fridge. Nice to drink also.
