I have tried the famous Serdang fried porridge years ago and been back to the place only twice after that. However, the taste of this special dish stayed with me and my husband so when we had the chance, we went out of the way to taste it again.
This place is very remote and quite far off from the toll turning to Serdang, Kedah. From Seberang Jaya, it will take about 45 minutes’ drive. We were on our way back from Taiping so we just make a detour for dinner at Serdang before heading back.
There are two restaurants selling fried porridge, one is the original one, which looks like a shack but was closed when we went and the second one, is a new one, opened by the first restaurant’s assistant cook. So, we gave this newer restaurant a try.
The place is called Fong Ting Siew Restaurant.
We ordered their specialties:
This is their (or rather the first restaurant’s) trademark dish: Fried Porridge.
Perhaps my expectations were high but it was not as good as I thought it would be. It tastes like fried rice except that it is soggy. Yep, it is really porridge being fried like fried rice style. However, they put too much ‘bak eu phoak’ (lard) in it and salt so it was quite salty.
Next is the deepfried prawns with siew bak (roast pork). This is also quite salty but if eaten with rice, it really goes magnificently! Yummy, I definitely love the prawns cooked this way. It has a fragrant taste which is a combination of the roast pork and the prawn. The prawns are fresh and crunchy too.
This is also another special dish: Deepfried fish with pickled vegetables (kerabu). The fish is fried to a crunchy crispiness and it is topped with the sweet and sour kerabu. So, eating the fish brings a burst of different flavours: the saltiness of the sauce, the sweetness and sourness of the kerabu and the crispy sweetness of the fish.
Their Tom Yam Prawns is by far the best dish amongst the others we ordered. The Tom Yam soup is spicy, sour and salty enough to make you want to drink it as a soup! Absolutely delicious.
For this meal, the price is wonderfully cheap. It is only RM80 for the dishes above and we also ordered a plate of green vegetables and a bowl of seaweed soup (for my son). Oh, and the servings were for five adults. And the serving size is quite big too. We had to really stuff ourselves to finish everything. Luckily we did not order a large bowl of the fried porridge!

my weekends are usually along some alley ways and back roads on some whimsical quest for that elusive dish or stall. btw, my latest sortie was to test out ALL the chai kuih shops of sg bakap; and the verdict? the best chai kuih known to me resides in kulim, kedah! if you want more details, feel free to contact me
45 minutes from Seberang Jaya, not that far. Will try it out next time!
