Honey, oh sweet honey

When I say honey, I meant the real honey, not the human type of honey….heh… So, honey has quite a few uses from making a drink, being used as a substitute for sugar and to being used as part of a marinating sauce for meat.

So, is honey nutritious at all?

So, here are some facts about honey:

1. It is very low in Saturated Fat, Cholesterol and Sodium

2. A tablespoon of honey contains 64 calories, all of it are carbohydrates.

3. It contains folate, vitamin C, choline, betaine, potassium, fluoride, calcium, phosphorus, magnesium and a lot of amino acids.

4. Most of the honey sold in supermarkets are diluted honey mixed with syrup.

5. The best way to differentiate between the syrup mix (being labeled as honey) with the real honey is to refrigerate it and if it hardens in the fridge, it is syrup. Pure honey does not harden in cold temperatures.

6. Honey could be used to soothe burns and prevent scarring by placing some on the bandage to be placed on wound, do not apply directly to skin.

7. Honey speeds up healing and fights infection if used on wounds.

8. It’s great as an energy booster due to its high glucose and fructose content.

9. It also helps to soften mucus for when you have a cold

10. Honey is an anti-microbial agent which deters the growth of bacteria, yeast and molds.

11. There are hundreds of different types of honey

12. You don’t need to refrigerate honey because it can be stored unopened, indefinitely, in a cool and dry place. Honey will not spoil easily.

13. Honey is made by honey bees and the bees used it as a food source to sustain the hive.

Here are recipes using honey:

Honey Chocolate Sauce

Ingredients

250g unsweetened cooking chocolate

1/4 cup water

1/2 cup honey

A dash of salt

3 tbsp butter or margarine

1/2 tsp vanilla essence

Instructions

1. Place chocolate, water, honey and salt in small saucepan over low heat.

2. Stir until chocolate is melted.

3. Then cook the mixture over medium heat until the mixture becomes smooth and slightly thick. Stir occasionally.

4. Remove from heat and stir in butter and vanilla.

5. Can be used as topping for cakes, scones, ice cream, etc.

Honey and Lemon Drink

Ingredients

3 tbsp honey

1 lemon

1 glass of water

Instructions

1. Mix honey with the water and stir till it was dissolved.

2. Squeeze the lemon into the mixture and stir.

3. Ready to serve warm or with ice.

Grilled Honey Chicken

Ingredients

2 tbsp honey

1 pc of chicken breast

1 tsp soya sauce

1 tsp dark soya sauce

a dash of pepper

garlic oil

Instructions

1. Season the chicken with the honey, sauces, garlic oil and pepper for at least an hour

2. Heat some cooking oil in a skillet / pan.

3. Grill the chicken till brown and cooked through.

4. Serve hot.

      A warm honey and lemon drink does wonders to soothe a bad sore throat. :)

      Honey on warm buttered toast…hmmmmm great.
