Putu Mayong and Putu Piring

Published by Foong at 9:47 am under Hawker Food, Snacks, Where to eat |

Although I have often seen these special snacks being sold at markets and roadsides, I have actually not tasted Putu Mayong or Putu Piring when I was small. The first time I tasted these wonderfully unique snacks was about 10 years ago.

It was a waste that I did not discover these snacks earlier on! However, ever since I first tasted my
putu mayong, I have been trying the putu mayong of every stall I came across. Still, my favourite stall will have to be this one in Pulau Tikus at a corner coffee shop next to the market:

Putu Mayong

This stall sells really soft putu piring and putu mayong. The good thing about it is that they wrap the sugar and shredded coconut separately so that i don’t have to endure too sweet flavour.

The putu piring comes with sweet fillings of mostly sugar. The putu piring (white round kuih) is so soft it is like cotton wool and it also practically falls apart when held. The taste is quite good as it is soft and sweet.

I also like the putu mayong which is also soft and not as stringy as it looks! These two kuih are steamed so it is oil-free. By itself, it is not really good on taste as it is quite bland. But team it with sugar and coconut, it tastes so much better with a tinge of salt and sweet.

Yum! Yum! Ganesan, our putu seller and his wife, do sell the most
delicious putus in town and have been doing so without any price increase for the past few years.

I have been frequenting his stall for years. This decent chap holds a full time day job and is at his stall 6 days (except Tuesday) a week in the evening, trying to earn that little bit extra for his family besides being involved in his pro-bono union work.

The likes of Ganesan really put to shame some of our Penang politicians who have, thus far, kept an elegant silence on the widely reported land scams.

PlainTruth: eh, thanks for the info on the Putu Mayong seller. I never did got around to chat with him.
The silence over the reported land scams are far from ‘elegant’, more like cowardly.
