Roasted Duck Rice in a corner

I am not a fan of roasted duck, mainly because of the tough duck meat and sometimes, if the restaurant / shop do not know how to prepare it, it will have a very heavy pungent smell. However, I do make exceptions for very good roasted duck. Either the duck has been roasted to perfection with wonderfully crispy skin and ultra tender meat or they better have a darn good sauce to go with the roasted duck!

However, I have found two great places with good roasted duck rice and the price is reasonable too in Butterworth. One of it is at the Tai Cho Hotel & Restaurant in Jalan Telaga Air, Butterworth.

It may look kind of rundown, but let me reassure you, the duck rice is good enough to make you forget about the environment, although inside, it is just like any other typical Malaysian style coffee shop!

The special thing about this stall’s duck rice is the the roasted duck is served with this special spicy sauce choked full of chili padi.  They also have side dishes of kiam chai boey (pickled vegetable soup), tofu and hard boiled eggs in soya sauce and fishball soup. You can also order roasted port with the roasted duck meat.

The roasted duck meat is tender enough and soaked in that wonderful spicy, sweet sour and salty sauce it is really good. The other side dishes are just additional accompaniments to the whole meal, nothing great about it. However, for the overall meal, simply delicious thanks to the really great sauce! A plate of duck rice is from RM3.50 per person and above (depending on the food you order).
