Chicken rice is the fastest and most filling food to go for during busy lunch hour especially if you are sick and tired of economy rice (which is no longer economical nowadays) and just want a simple meal with protein and carbs. One of our favourite chicken rice haunts is this place right opposite the Red Rock Hotel along Macalister Road.
Kowloon Hainan Chicken Rice
The proprietor has been selling Hainan chicken rice for decades and my husband frequented his stall so much since his college days that the proprietor remembers my husband even till now.
I normally do not know what to eat for breakfast and usually rely on cereal or just bread with a glass of milk. Yes, I still drink milk in the mornings although now I alternate between milk and soya milk. It’s a habit I picked up years ago and did not see any reason to stop.
Sometimes, when I have the time, I’d prepare french toast and eat it together with some fruits. Recently, I bought from nectarines which I felt are really delicious with its nice sweetish-sourish tang to really awaken the senses.
I’ve been to Tao Cuisine in e-Gate a few times already and each time, I really like their delicious food. The most wonderful part is of course the ala-carte buffet where you can order whatever you want from the menu instead of lining up and making do with the buffet line.
They don’t only offer Japanese-style food but also Thai and fusion food. A note of caution to those with young children. They will insist on charging for a child who is over 3 feet tall. My son is almost 3-feet tall (but he is only two years . . . → Read More: Japanese buffet at Tao Cuisine
When I was small, one of my favourite dishes (other than spinach – thanks to Popeye) is what we commonly called ‘steak’ but it is not even remotely like steak and it is not made of beef!
It is actually pork meatball cooked with potatoes, onions and frozen mixed vegetables (cubed carrots, corn and peas), sort of like a stew. What’s great about this dish is that the gravy is exceptionally tasty and it can be eaten as a main dish too!
So, here’s my recipe for this dish using chicken instead of pork.
I remember when I was pregnant with my son years ago, I used to have this craving for really tasty porridge and this place became one of our favourite haunts for some clear soup dishes and seafood porridge.
We found the Sungai Tiram Joo Leong Seafood Porridge by accident because we become quite curious by the crowds there each time we pass that way. Even though we have heard about the famous ‘bihun soup’ place in Bayan Lepas, we never did link it to this wooden coffee shop along the main road of Jalan Sultan Azlan Shah. Due to my addiction to Uncle Bob’s fried chicken, I decided to make my own healthy fried chicken (as how they promote their fried chicken) with my own batter to make the chicken crunchy and yet as healthy as fried chicken could be.
However, we all know, anything deep fried is rarely healthy so I guess it ain’t all that healthy anyway and is probably loaded with millions of calories. Heh. Anyway, I experimented and finally came up with this simple and easy batter for the chicken and fry it to a crispiness that is almost like the Uncle . . . → Read More: Crunchy fried chicken
It is not easy to find the Malay-style pohpiah that is delicious. As far as I know there are only two good Malay pohpiah stalls, one in Swatow Lane (who has moved into New World Park but after that has moved again but I do not know where) and the second one is the sole halal store at the roadside hawker centre along Jalan Johor, right next to the Yong Tau Hoo stall.
It is quite different from the Chinese pohpiah and it has taugeh (beansprouts) with a different type of sauce. Taste is the sweetness of the . . . → Read More: Halal Pohpiah
