I remember when I was pregnant with my son years ago, I used to have this craving for really tasty porridge and this place became one of our favourite haunts for some clear soup dishes and seafood porridge.
We found the Sungai Tiram Joo Leong Seafood Porridge by accident because we become quite curious by the crowds there each time we pass that way. Even though we have heard about the famous ‘bihun soup’ place in Bayan Lepas, we never did link it to this wooden coffee shop along the main road of Jalan Sultan Azlan Shah. That is, until we went in and tried it! Since then, we’d go there for dinner at least once in two months. The 30 minutes drive there is worth it.
In the shop, other than the seafood porridge, bihun (vermicelli) and noodles, there are several other stalls there selling satay, salted chicken and cuttlefish. They are also famous for their butter toast which is simply the best I’ve ever tasted.
The seafood bihun, needless to say, is really very good. You get to choose the ingredients, either prawns, fish, frog, fishballs, crab or bird eggs and whatever the ingredients, the soup is still as tasty as ever. It is also quite a big portion. As for the salted chicken and satay, well, these just prove to be great accompaniments if there are a lot of you and you would like some meat to go with the purely seafood meal.
The prices are reasonable, although not exactly cheap as each bowl is from RM5 onwards (depending on ingredients). The shop can be easily found along the way to the airport.
It is open nightly from 7pm onwards and closed on Mondays.
