Prawn curry next to the bridge

Published by Foong at 1:48 pm under Asian Food, Restaurants, Where to eat |

There is this very famous freshwater prawns restaurant in Sungai Acheh, Nibong Tebal that we occasionally go to. It is about 40 minutes’ drive from the island and if you are staying on the mainland, it is only 30 minutes’ drive.

I never did find out the name of the place and it is like a regular old fashioned coffee shop than a restaurant. It is situated right next to the river and a bridge.

Here is a map to the place. From the toll plaza, go straight and then turn left at the traffic lights. Go straight and go up the overhead bridge and continue going straight. After that you will see a traffic light but go straight and about 400 metres after that, you will see a road on the right with sighboard indicating Sungai Acheh. Turn into that road. Do note that this is before the Mobil petrol station. From there go straight till the end and you will reach a T-junction so you turn right there. From there, you go straight again and you will reach another T-junction and you turn right and you will see the shop there.

At the kitchen area of the shop, customers get to look at the freshwater prawns that are being kept at two huge plastic tanks. Their prawns are all fresh from the prawn farms.

freshwater prawns

They are particularly famous for their prawn curry and the curry is really great with steamed bread.

Prawn curry

The prawn curry is prepared with their own curry paste and instead of coconut milk (santan), they used fresh milk to thicken the curry. The end result is a really fragrant and spicy curry. Absolutely delicious!

fried fish

They also have fried fish (ikan kembong) as one of the dishes but people mostly order the prawn curry. The price of eating at this small little shop is quite reasonable.

For 1.2kg of prawns, four fried fishes, a plate of steamed bread and rice and drinks, the total price is RM86. The amount of food is enough for five adults. On weekends or Fridays, it is best to pre-order the prawns or else it would run out.

    1. [...] Upon publishing this blog post, the market price of the medium size prawns was fifty-nine ringgit per kilo. The prawn dish itself is RM30 with the fish at RM27. The total bill for the food with bottles of fresh sugar cane juice cost RM69. Overall, a more than enjoyable long trip makan outing for the three of us. For other review, drop over to The Food Site.
