The wonder herb called Rosemary

I was introduced to the wonderful world of fresh herbs by The Naked Chef, Jamie Oliver. Amongst the many herbs I found in Tesco or Jaya Jusco is Rosemary.

Now this wonder herb have been touted to be full of nutrition and medicinal values. Other than being used as an ingredient while cooking, it was used to make aromatherapy oils and medicinal oils.

So, what’s so wonderful and great about this plain looking herb? Well, it is found to have plenty of benefits to our health. Here is a list of its benefits:

  • It contains caffeic acid and rosemarinic acid which are strong antioxidant and anti-inflammatory agents
  • It contains antioxidants: monoterpenes, phenolic diterpenes and flavonoids, which are known to slow down the production of free radicals which could reduce cancer risks.
  • It is a rich source of vitamin E which is another type of antioxidant that could fight off free radicals.
  • Rosemary extract is found to be able to prevent wrinkles by protecting skin cells if applied onto the skin.
  • The extract stimulates your liver to help your body flush out toxins easily.
  • It is also good to improve your kidney functions and reduces water retention.

Although this herb is full of health benefits, it is completely another matter when consuming the extract. You see, consuming the herbs as part of an ingredient of any dish means you won’t be taking a lot of it anyway. Perhaps only a pinch of it or so to add flavour to the food.

However, if it is the extract, it is pure concentrated ‘juice’ from the herb. Too much of a good thing could also cause serious complications. So, if you are pregnant or have any serious health problems like heart disease, it is better that you consult your doctor before taking rosemary extract.
