The benefits of the herb called sage
Whether it is cooking Asian food or western food or fusion food, the use of herbs is always better than using salt or any other flavourings. Herbs often add a fresh scent, flavour and taste to the food that can’t be replaced by artificial manmade flavourings.
Today, I bring to you the lesser known and lesser used herb…
Sage is actually quite an aromatic herb, so if you can’t stand strong-smelling herbs, it is better not to use too much of it. I usually mix it together with other herbs such as rosemary, basil and thyme to season chicken or salmon. However, you can also add it to salads and soups.
As with any other herbs, I usually like to use it fresh instead of the dried ones. This is because fresh sage gives off a strong aroma as compared to the dried ones. Sage is also known for its many medicinal benefits.
Here are the facts and benefits of Sage:
- Sage tea is great for sore throats and coughs
- This herb has been used for centuries by herbalists for sprains, swellings, ulcers, bleeding, rheumatism, strengthening the nervous system and improving memory.
- It contains alpha and beta-thujone, camphor, cineole, rosmarinic acid, tannins and flavanoids.
- Sage oil has antiviral, antibacterial and antifungal effects
- It is also used to relieve symptoms of upset stomach, excessive sweating and menopause.
To make your own sage tea to alleviate mouth ulcers, sore throats and gingivitis, here’s the recipe:
Sage Tea
Ingredients
3 gm fresh sage leaves
150ml water
Instructions
1. Boil the water and add the sage leaves.
2. Let it stand for about 10 minutes and then strain the tea.
3. You can use it as mouthwash or to gargle several times a day.
4. Alternatively, you can also drink it as a tea.
So the next time you have a sore throat, give this tea a try first!
