Quite a few months back, I wrote a post about heart healthy foods due to a lifestyle change but after that I seemed to have been posting quite some unhealthy foods (but all of it are darn good!) so now I will do a post on foods that prevent cancer.
I’ve been hearing a lot about some acquiantances or relatives or even friends succumbing to cancer. Cancer is a very frightening word and in this modern day when it is so common, we should do all we can to prevent it.
Yes, we are really what we eat and eating good wholesome foods can prevent cancer.
So, here is a list I’ve compiled after reading a lot about:
Foods That Prevent Cancer
Mom was right after all when she make you eat up your greens!
Cruciferous vegetables also include cauliflowers, cabbage, kale and brussels sprouts. Apparently, once you chew on these vegetables, it’d release antioxidants called sulforaphane. Studies have shown that sulforaphane has a cancer-killing effect. So start chewing! Oh, it is best to stir fry these vegetables or better still, eat it raw as part of your salad.
Turmeric, also known as Curcumin, is a popular ingredient used for Indian curries and most of the local Asian curries (especially so in Malaysia). It gives whatever dish you are cooking a yellowish, orange tinge. Well, looks like this root (in the ginger family) packs quite a punch as it has antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties. Research has shown that turmeric could suppress cancer cells due to its anti-inflammatory properties.
So, sprinkle some turmeric powder in your dishes and other than giving your food a new zesty taste, it is good for you! Or cook a pot curry (okay, okay, I have yet to post a real curry recipe. Maybe I’ll do it pretty soon) for one of your meals!
Berries are antioxidants that contain a lot of Vitamin C and fibre. A study have shown that foods with high Vitamin C could prevent esophagus cancer and high-fibre foods prevens colorectal cancer. Other than that, raspberries and strawberries contained ellagic acid, a compound known to prevent several types of cancers including lung and breast cancer.
Why not enjoy some berries for breakfast each day? It will give your body a boost of antioxidants and vitamins while at the same time help your body fight off cancer!
These round fruits are not only good for the heart, it is also good to fight off cancer! This is because it contains lycopene which gave it its red colouring. Research have shown that lycopene is good at fighting off prostrate, breast and lung cancer.
The best part of all, these can be eaten as it is. No cooking required if you don’t feel like cooking. And yes, it is a fruit, not a vegetable.
This root is often use as a spice in many Asian dishes, much like its ‘cousin’ the turmeric, and looks like adding it to your dishes is a good thing too! Research has shown that ginger kills cancer cells and is particularly potent in fighting off ovarian cancer.
So, it seems that it is not only useful for nausea and stomach discomfort due to flatulence, it is also good to prevent cancer!
A cup of macha (Japanese green tea) without sugar and milk is full of antioxidants that not only give you youthful skin but apparently, also fights off cancer. Research has shown these fragrant tea really do pack a punch as it could prevent bladder, colon, stomach and pancreatic cancers.
Soy protein has long being used as a protein substitute for vegans and vegetarians. Looks like these wonder beans are also quite good for health as research results have also shown that this wonder bean may just prevent cancer.
Foods high in Vitamin D and Folate
Foods high in Vitamin D and folate includes milk, eggs, cod fish, salmon, orange juice and many more are good to supply the required amount of folate which could prevent cancer. As for the Vitamin D, we can always get it from some old fashion sunshine!
So, there you have it. Some foods that prevent cancer. Instead of eating only these foods listed above, I think the general rule of thumb for a healthier, cancer-free life is to add more greens and fruits into your diet. Eating fresh produce will boost most aspects of your health.
Now that you know about what you should eat more of, isn’t it time you head over to the organic vegetarian store and stock up your supply of greens? Remember, a diet rich in vegetables and fruits can and will be able to fight off cancer.

Hugging the Coast: The only thing I don’t like about turmeric (especially the fresh ones) is the yellow tinge it leaves on my hands for days! but it really makes great curries.
Criz: Urk. I don’t like bitter gourd. Yucks. I think I’d rather eat a million berries and broccoli before eating bitter gourd….
