I’ve been frequenting Eng Lor Coffee Shop for lunch for more than 10 years now and till now, I still like their wonderful french toast and the variety of great hawker food there.
Situated right in the middle of George Town along the busy narrow streets of the inner city, it is not easy to find parking around the vicinity. In fact, it was downright difficult. And for those who’s not use to Penang traffic, it is not easy to manouvre through the narrow busy streets. Still, I love going there for lunch.
We are die-hard Hainan chicken rice and (char siew) roast pork fans so we tend to try out quite a lot of chicken rice stalls all over Penang. One of the stalls we often frequented is the one at Kristal Coffee Shop.
Kristal Coffee Shop
They have absolutely delectable roasted chicken, roasted pork and yes, even roasted duck.
Roast pork, roast duck, vegetables and soup
This is what we usually order when there’s five of us lunching there (including in-laws lar). I simply love their:
This hawker complex used to be called the Seahorse Food Court when it first opened and initially, it has quite a lot of really great stalls offering really delicious hawker food. We have stopped going there for several years after moving further away from Tanjung Bungah. So, recently, we decided to go there to meet up with some friends.
Golden Sand Bayview Food Corner
There are still quite a few hawker stalls still surviving there but not as much as in the ‘old’ days. It has been renamed (I heard it’s due to change in owner) and it . . . → Read More: Hawker complex in Tanjung Tokong
I have tried a lot of Chee Cheong Fan (steamed rice flour rolls covered in prawn paste and chilli sauce) everywhere and I can safely say that the best ever chee cheong fan is definitely the one at Genting Coffee shop in Greenlane.
Chee Cheong Fan
The best part of any Chee Cheong Fan is the sauce. If the sauce is darn good, then the dish can be said as very delicious. This is because the rice flour rolls are practically tasteless. I can never understand people who could eat these plain, without sauce except for some sesame . . . → Read More: The best Chee Cheong Fan
I love spicy foods and one of the best tomyam noodle places I usually go to is the famous Lai Hoe hawker stall in Bayan Baru.
Lai Hoe Tomyam Bee Hoon
Remember the stall number. It is located within the hawker complex in Bayan Baru, next to Sunshine Square.
See here for detailed map to the complex.
They also have a ‘branch’ in another food court in Bukit Jambul but I prefer this original stall. The man busily cooking behind the stall is the main ‘chef’.
I remember we used to gorge ourselves with pizzas whenever there is some sort of promotion at one of the pizza places where you buy one, you get one free. At one point, I got so sick of pizza, the mere mention of pizzas have me turning really green and quesy.
It is after a few years of restricting consumption of pizzas to once or twice a year, I started appreciating this wonder bread which originated from Italy. However, we seldom do get a chance to order pizzas because we can’t finish it all and one regular pizza is . . . → Read More: Deliciously sinful mini pizza
Chicken rice is the fastest and most filling food to go for during busy lunch hour especially if you are sick and tired of economy rice (which is no longer economical nowadays) and just want a simple meal with protein and carbs. One of our favourite chicken rice haunts is this place right opposite the Red Rock Hotel along Macalister Road.
Kowloon Hainan Chicken Rice
The proprietor has been selling Hainan chicken rice for decades and my husband frequented his stall so much since his college days that the proprietor remembers my husband even till now.
