Affordable Chinese food in the old part of town

This old style restaurant has been around for almost half a century in the middle of George Town and just only a few years back, the original owner’s son took over the business. Luckily, the food is still just as good and I am glad that the taste remained as good as when we went there to eat years ago.

I wouldn’t know whether the food tastes the same as 10 or 20 years ago since I am, ahem, too young to know…heheh. My husband first introduced me to this place years ago when we first started going out . . . → Read More: Affordable Chinese food in the old part of town

Japanese buffet at Tao Cuisine

I’ve been to Tao Cuisine in e-Gate a few times already and each time, I really like their delicious food. The most wonderful part is of course the ala-carte buffet where you can order whatever you want from the menu instead of lining up and making do with the buffet line.

They don’t only offer Japanese-style food but also Thai and fusion food. A note of caution to those with young children. They will insist on charging for a child who is over 3 feet tall. My son is almost 3-feet tall (but he is only two years . . . → Read More: Japanese buffet at Tao Cuisine

Famous seafood shop near the airport

I remember when I was pregnant with my son years ago, I used to have this craving for really tasty porridge and this place became one of our favourite haunts for some clear soup dishes and seafood porridge.

We found the Sungai Tiram Joo Leong Seafood Porridge by accident because we become quite curious by the crowds there each time we pass that way. Even though we have heard about the famous ‘bihun soup’ place in Bayan Lepas, we never did link it to this wooden coffee shop along the main road of Jalan Sultan Azlan Shah. The real Cheang Kee NT Restaurant

After the travesty of going to the old shoplot in Nibong Tebal where now there is another restaurant by the name of Law Chang Kee Restaurant, we made a point to pay the real NT Cheang Kee Restaurant a visit the next time we passes by.

The restaurant, famous for its crab porridge and Teochew style dishes, is now occupying a corner lot with plenty of places for huge crowds. Since we were in a rush, we did not dine in and only tar pau (packed back) their crab porridge.

Their crab porridge is probably the . . . → Read More: The real Cheang Kee NT Restaurant

Prawn curry next to the bridge

There is this very famous freshwater prawns restaurant in Sungai Acheh, Nibong Tebal that we occasionally go to. It is about 40 minutes’ drive from the island and if you are staying on the mainland, it is only 30 minutes’ drive.

I never did find out the name of the place and it is like a regular old fashioned coffee shop than a restaurant. It is situated right next to the river and a bridge.

Here is a map to the place. From the toll plaza, go straight and then turn left at the traffic lights. . . . → Read More: Prawn curry next to the bridge

Fried porridge off the way

I have tried the famous Serdang fried porridge years ago and been back to the place only twice after that. However, the taste of this special dish stayed with me and my husband so when we had the chance, we went out of the way to taste it again.

This place is very remote and quite far off from the toll turning to Serdang, Kedah. From Seberang Jaya, it will take about 45 minutes’ drive. We were on our way back from Taiping so we just make a detour for dinner at Serdang before heading back.

Koay Teow, Wan Tan and Chicken

I don’t eat Koay Teow Th’ng a lot and if I have a choice, I’d much prefer the ‘kon loh’ version (with sauce and not soup). So, when I was taken to this shop to try their Koay Teow Th’ng I was quite apprehensive.

Luckily, they do have the kon loh Koay Teow so I ordered that. This restaurant is actually quite an old one that has been in business for decades. It is very famous in Butterworth (so I am told) for its Koay Teow and chicken and wan tan.

And it is . . . → Read More: Koay Teow, Wan Tan and Chicken
