I’ve been to the Look Yuen Restaurant in Bukit Mertajam quite a few times already and each time, I never tire of their trademark dishes.
Look Yuen Restaurant
They have a variety of dishes to choose from but we always like to order their braised pork leg, fish curry and honey chicken, amongst other more normal dishes.
Fish curry
Their fish curry is slightly different from other places because it is a combination of coconut milk curry with lime. It may sound weird but the taste is really amazing because the sourish tinge actually helps to . . . → Read More: The famous Chinese restaurant in Bukit Mertajam
I don’t usually cook curry simply because I hate sautee-ing the ingredients and getting oil all over my kitchen. Also, I am too lazy busy to be chopping and cutting and grinding the ingredients to make the paste. However, since I am trying to find new ways to cook the leftover salmon I still have, I might as well use it to cook curry.
So, instead of chopping, cutting, grinding and blending my own curry paste, I took the easy way out. Packaged curry paste. Simple, easy and comes with instructions too!
I have tried a lot of Chee Cheong Fan (steamed rice flour rolls covered in prawn paste and chilli sauce) everywhere and I can safely say that the best ever chee cheong fan is definitely the one at Genting Coffee shop in Greenlane.
Chee Cheong Fan
The best part of any Chee Cheong Fan is the sauce. If the sauce is darn good, then the dish can be said as very delicious. This is because the rice flour rolls are practically tasteless. I can never understand people who could eat these plain, without sauce except for some sesame . . . → Read More: The best Chee Cheong Fan
I love spicy foods and one of the best tomyam noodle places I usually go to is the famous Lai Hoe hawker stall in Bayan Baru.
Lai Hoe Tomyam Bee Hoon
Remember the stall number. It is located within the hawker complex in Bayan Baru, next to Sunshine Square.
See here for detailed map to the complex.
They also have a ‘branch’ in another food court in Bukit Jambul but I prefer this original stall. The man busily cooking behind the stall is the main ‘chef’.
If you want to talk about eating fish, the only type of fish I simply love eating is salmon. There’s no way around it. I don’t like any other old fish all that much. Mostly, I can’t stand the smell of other normal fish but salmon, especially fresh ones, I think is simply heavenly. Also, I’ve mentioned before that salmon is very healthy and good for the heart.
So, recently, I went and bought a whole salmon and this is how I prepared the fish for two meals.
Chicken rice is the fastest and most filling food to go for during busy lunch hour especially if you are sick and tired of economy rice (which is no longer economical nowadays) and just want a simple meal with protein and carbs. One of our favourite chicken rice haunts is this place right opposite the Red Rock Hotel along Macalister Road.
Kowloon Hainan Chicken Rice
The proprietor has been selling Hainan chicken rice for decades and my husband frequented his stall so much since his college days that the proprietor remembers my husband even till now.
I’ve been to Tao Cuisine in e-Gate a few times already and each time, I really like their delicious food. The most wonderful part is of course the ala-carte buffet where you can order whatever you want from the menu instead of lining up and making do with the buffet line.
They don’t only offer Japanese-style food but also Thai and fusion food. A note of caution to those with young children. They will insist on charging for a child who is over 3 feet tall. My son is almost 3-feet tall (but he is only two years . . . → Read More: Japanese buffet at Tao Cuisine
