The Arte y Pico Award

Published by Foong under Food Events, Food Trivia |

Oh wow. I am simply so overwhelmed! And wordless AGAIN in so little days…

I just received another award from fellow food blogger April, The Hungry Engineer.

This is the Arte y Pico.

Arte y pico

Thanks so much April! I’m sure you’ve read how I salivated over her Fig and Prosciutto Pizza just only recently. And then after that, she posted this absolutely fabulous to-die-for Chocolate Mousse Pie Recipe. If you are a chocolate lover, go there and check it out.

Okay, I was made to understand that this award comes with strings attached…heheh..it has rules to adhere to:

  • Pick 5 blogs that you consider deserve this award, creativity, design, interesting material, and also contributes to the blogger community, no matter of language.

  • Advertise name of the author and also a link to his or her blog to be visited by everyone.

  • Each award-winner, has to show the award and put the name and link to the blog that has given her or him the award itself.

  • Award-winner and the one who has given the prize have to show the link of “Arte y pico” blog, so everyone will know the origin of this award.

  • Share these rules.

Okay, so now it’s my chance to pass this Arte y Pico award along to…

Jessie of Simply Scrumptious - she has a pretty blog with great recipes and reviews. Check out her Pesto Stuffed Steak with roasted red potatoes.

Lynn the Bentoist - Packed lunches will never be the same again once you check out this creative lady who could practically cook anything to fit into the bento! I simply love her Steamed Chicken Char Siew Buns and the great part about her posts is that there’s a slideshow to go with the recipe.

Freya at the Cocoa Lounge - I’m a die hard chocolate lover and this lady obviously is one too! Just go on over to the blog and drool over her Chocolate Brownie Cake.

Gail of The Pink Peppercorn - This is one blog where you will find beautiful pictures and recipes for delicious AND healthy food. Check out her ultra wholesome healthy breakfast.

Vanessa of Italy in SF - If it’s Italian food you are craving, you should just check out this site. I absolutely love this photo essay of how to make your own pasta!

That’s the end of my Arte y Pico Awards list. Now, I was made to understand that I could pass along the Fabulous Blogger Award that was given to me by Jessie of The Hungry Mouse, so now, I am passing it along too:

Fabulous Food Blogger Award

Cajun Chef Ryan - This chef has a lot of great recipes. Do, check out his Chicken Breast Sauté recipe.

Nicole at Bay Area Foodie - She does a lot of reviews of places in Bay Area and teamed it with beautiful pictures. This post makes me hungry and we know I have this weakness for desserts…

KianLam of Red Cook - Take a look behind a Chinese kitchen (okay, so mine is also a Chinese kitchen but I cook a lot of stuffs that are not so typically Chinese….) and the best part about his blog is that he has this stir-fry technique series for those who are new to Chinese cooking.

Reeni of Cinnamon Spice & Everything Nice - If anything, I love her baking recipes and this one for peanut butter and jelly oatmeal muffins looks darn good.

Ken and his team of food tasters at Food Point of Interest - This blog has a lot of great food reviews teamed with plenty of mouthwatering pictures. Check out this video guide on how to make murukku, the Indian snack.

Lilian of Penang Foods -  This famous blogger, more popularly known as 5xmom, has a lot of food blogs and this is one of it where she introduces the places to eat in Penang.

Okay, that should end my long list for now. I actually have a Special E-Blogger Award coming up and I will mention that in a few days’ time.

Foods that prevent cancer

Published by Foong under Food Trivia, Healthy food |

Quite a few months back, I wrote a post about heart healthy foods due to a lifestyle change but after that I seemed to have been posting quite some unhealthy foods (but all of it are darn good!) so now I will do a post on foods that prevent cancer.

I’ve been hearing a lot about some acquiantances or relatives or even friends succumbing to cancer. Cancer is a very frightening word and in this modern day when it is so common, we should do all we can to prevent it.

Yes, we are really what we eat and eating good wholesome foods can prevent cancer.

So, here is a list I’ve compiled after reading a lot about:

Foods That Prevent Cancer

Cruciferous Vegetables like broccoli

Cruciferous Vegetables like broccoli

Mom was right after all when she make you eat up your greens!

Cruciferous vegetables also include cauliflowers, cabbage, kale and brussels sprouts. Apparently, once you chew on these vegetables, it’d release an antioxidant called sulforaphane. Studies have shown that sulforaphane has a cancer-killing effect. So start chewing! Oh, it is best to stir fry these vegetables or better still, eat it raw as part of your salad.

Turmeric or curcumin

Turmeric, also known as Curcumin, is a popular ingredient used for Indian curries and most of the local Asian curries (especially so in Malaysia). It gives whatever dish you are cooking a yellowish, orange tinge. Well, looks like this root (in the ginger family) packs quite a punch as it has antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties. Research has shown that turmeric could suppress cancer cells due to its anti-inflammatory properties.

So, sprinkle some turmeric powder in your dishes and other than giving your food a new zesty taste, it is good for you! Or cook a pot curry (okay, okay, I have yet to post a real curry recipe. Maybe I’ll do it pretty soon) for one of your meals!

Berries such as blueberries and raspberries

Berries such as blueberries and raspberries or..

Strawberries

Strawberries

Berries are antioxidants that contain a lot of Vitamin C and fibre. A study have shown that foods with high Vitamin C could prevent esophagus cancer and high-fibre foods prevens colorectal cancer. Other than that, raspberries and strawberries contained ellagic acid, a compound known to prevent several types of cancers including lung and breast cancer.

Why not enjoy some berries for breakfast each day? It will give your body a boost of antioxidants and vitamins while at the same time help your body fight off cancer!

Tomatoes

Tomatoes

These round fruits are not only good for the heart, it is also good to fight off cancer! This is because it contains lycopene which gave it its red colouring. Research have shown that lycopene is good at fighting off prostrate, breast and lung cancer.

The best part of all, these can be eaten as it is. No cooking required if you don’t feel like cooking. And yes, it is a fruit, not a vegetable.

Ginger

Ginger

This root is often use as a spice in many Asian dishes, much like its ‘cousin’ the turmeric, and looks like adding it to your dishes is a good thing too! Research has shown that ginger kills cancer cells and is particularly potent in fighting off ovarian cancer.

So, it seems that it is not only useful for nausea and stomach discomfort due to flatulence, it is also good to prevent cancer!

Green tea

Green tea

A cup of macha (Japanese green tea) without sugar and milk is full of antioxidants that not only give you youthful skin but apparently, also fights off cancer. Research has shown these fragrant tea really do pack a punch as it could prevent bladder, colon, stomach and pancreatic cancers.

Soy beans

Soy beans

Soy protein has long being used as a protein substitute for vegans and vegetarians. Looks like these wonder beans are also quite good for health as research results have also shown that this wonder bean may just prevent cancer.

Foods high in Vitamin D and Folate

Foods high in Vitamin D and folate includes milk, eggs, cod fish, salmon, orange juice and many more are good to supply the required amount of folate which could prevent cancer. As for the Vitamin D, we can always get it from some old fashion sunshine!

So, there you have it. Some foods that prevent cancer. Instead of eating only these foods listed above, I think the general rule of thumb for a healthier, cancer-free life is to add more greens and fruits into your diet. Eating fresh produce will boost most aspects of your health.

Now that you know about what you should eat more of, isn’t it time you head over to the organic vegetarian store and stock up your supply of greens? Remember, a diet rich in vegetables and fruits can and will be able to fight off cancer.
