Penang Food Festival 2009

There’s a reason why the Penang Tourism Action Council head Madam Kee is larger than life, literally. She sure do love her food and when it comes to food events, it simply must be crammed with loads of food. So, I can say that this year’s Penang Food Festival with three main food events in it is pretty interesting.

There’s the iFoodex, which is the food expo by companies hawking their wares. Surprisingly, there’s some new things to be seen like Canned Ikan Keli (catfish) which is a first. There’s also a stall selling fresh and frozen abalone for . . . → Read More: Penang Food Festival 2009

Really good mee goreng in Tanjung Bungah

I usually do not like noodles, especially the yellow-coloured ones most used by hawkers so whenever we eat out, I don’t order noodles but I have one exception and that is the Indian Mee Goreng (Indian fried noodles). Maybe it’s the spiciness of the dish or the sauce or the extremely satisfying taste of mee goreng, whatever it is, I could never resist a good plate of mee goreng.

I remember I had this mee goreng craving during my pregnancy. I would demand for mee goreng for lunch or dinner every single day for the first three months! I . . . → Read More: Really good mee goreng in Tanjung Bungah

Hawker food galore at Sungai Dua Night Market

Before I start, let me first say that we are a family of pasar malam (night market) junkies. We love visiting night markets and since there is always one on any day of the week, we’d surely make a beeline to one at least once a fortnight. Luckily, we have not been having many rainy nights recently or else we’d not be able to go for our regular pasar malam stint.

So, in this post, instead of writing a review, I’d like to make it into a photo post of the Sungai Dua Night Market which is on every . . . → Read More: Hawker food galore at Sungai Dua Night Market

Cheap and good yam rice along busy Lebuh McNair

About two months ago, I was fast running out of food blogging material and in quite a panic. What am I going to blog about now? I can’t just update the blog once a week. Not when I have established a pattern from the start that at the very least, I’d blog once in every two days here, unlike my personal blog where I blog on a daily basis.

Now, I suddenly have a stockpile of blog posts which I have not written and posted. I have recipes of desserts and main dishes and reviews of food places and . . . → Read More: Cheap and good yam rice along busy Lebuh McNair

The Koay Teow Th’ng stall tucked in a small coffee shop along busy Magazine Road

I have heard of this famous Koay Teow Th’ng (flat rice noodles soup) stall from friends several times over. I’ve friends who’d go there for breakfast or lunch all the time without tiring of her food. And I wondered why.

You know I am not all that crazy about koay teow th’ng. It is more of The Food Critic’s thing than anything. Still, I was curious.

So, to satisfy my curiousity, I tried out the food there.

The stall itself is unassuming (except for the Chinese newspaper write-up plastered on . . . → Read More: The Koay Teow Th’ng stall tucked in a small coffee shop along busy Magazine Road

Street hawker foods over at Kimberley Street

It has been awhile since we went to Kimberley Street for the variety of hawker food we can find there. So, instead of another restaurant or coffee shop, we decided to go for the good old Penang-style street hawker food along a stretch of Kimberley Street.

The one main stall we head for is this one…

The Koay Teow Th'ng / Noodles Soup stall with extras

Unlike other koay teow th’ng / beehoon th’ng (noodles / vermicelli soup) stalls, this one has side dishes to go with the noodles soup.

Cheap and good hawker food

I thought I’d never be able to find cheap and good hawker food again in Penang what with most hawkers increasing their prices to RM3.50 per plate or if we are really lucky, RM3 per plate for two mouthfuls of pitifully small portion of food.

So, imagine my delight when I discovered this corner coffee shop in Island Park…

Island Park Restaurant

It is open daily for breakfast and lunch only. They have about six to eight hawker stalls. Amongst the good ones are the Char Koay Teow (Chinese style fried rice noodles), pan mee (handmade rice flour . . . → Read More: Cheap and good hawker food
